Cotec Foundation was founded on the 24th of April 2001 in order to enhance the Italian technological competitiveness. Under the Honorary Chairmanship of the President of the Italian Republic, Cotec is a private foundation where the different capabilities, backgrounds and interests of Institutions, Firms and Academies can find a shared hub in technological innovation.
Cotec Foundation, by an institutional commitment that includes research, dialogue, project development and communication activities, acts as both a propeller of actions to improve the Italian technological competitiveness and a centre of matching and coordination of the main Italian players of the Innovation System. Along with Fundación Cotec of Spain and Associação Cotec of Portugal, Cotec is committed to represent national and Mediterranean interests relevant to technological innovation policies and support initiatives at European level.

Cotec Foundation is committed to support the Italian technological competitiveness by four lines of activities:
- Research - Cotec carries out analysis and research on technological innovation issues in favour of its stakeholders: emerging technologies analysis and socio-economic impact evaluation; analysis of the technological patterns shaping the competition in the Italian strategic industries; evaluation of supply and demand of the Italian technological knowledge with special focus on public research system capabilities and SMEs needs.
- Dialogue - Cotec intends to be a place for matching and composition of the different claims of the technological innovation stakeholders: favours the coordination between the involved institution about the public policies proposal on Innovation; represents Firms’ needs at the proper institutional levels in the Research policies definition process; contributes, along with the Spanish and Portuguese Cotec, to the fine tuning of the Research and Innovation policies at European level; promotes consistency between regional and national research policy.
- Project development – Cotec organizes technological innovation support initiatives both at national and European level: Development of International Memorandum of Understanding to jointly carry out new technological solutions; support in the participation of technological research call for proposal at regional, national and European level.
- Communication - Cotec is committed in the diffusion of a genuine culture of Innovation: organisation of public and institutional event to increase the awareness about the importance of innovation and technological competitiveness among Government, Firms and public opinion; sensitiveness promotion about contemporary technological innovation challenges by an active media presence.
